| Plenty of water for good boating - No 5 mile an hour speed limit!
(June 22, 2015) Let the record be set straight - Folsom Lake is still open for business and water conditions are still good for boating. Recent media reports have been misleading, and in some cases, actually wrong in their reporting of boating conditions at Folsom Lake. While patrons of the Folsom Lake Marina have been asked to move their boats to dry storage this weekend, there is no restriction on boating. Folsom Lake Marina sits at a higher elevation, thus as water levels drop, these boats must be moved to land. This is true of every season, not just drought years.
When the water level reaches approximately 400 feet, a five mile per hour speed limit is placed on the lake to protect boaters from obstacles.
Folsom Lake is a reservoir. It's main purpose is used for water storage and management. Every year, the Bureau of Reclamation, the agency which manages the water, releases water for various commitments and obligations. The rate and consistancy of which water is released varies greatly. As a result, it is hard to predict when boating restrictions will be implemented.
